Meet Andi: Lumo's AI Irrigation Assistant

Andi is Lumo's AI irrigation assistant that texts you when your farm needs attention, answers your questions, and takes action on your farm — all over SMS. No app, no login.

In this article

1. What is Andi?

Andi is your irrigation co-pilot — by text message.

When something on the farm needs your attention — a leak, a run that didn't start cleanly, a valve low on battery — Andi sends you an SMS so you can act before water, crops, or infrastructure are at risk. You can text Andi back to ask about your farm — what's running, what ran yesterday, why a block got flagged — and Andi pulls the answer straight from your data.

Andi can also act on your farm for you. Ask it to open or close a valve, start an irrigation, log a note, or reschedule a run, and Andi will do it — the same as if you'd done it in the app yourself. Every action is tied to your account and shows up in your farm's history.

No app to download. No login. Just text.

2. Getting started — your first week

When

What to expect

Day 1

You'll get a short welcome SMS from Andi's number. Save it as a contact called "Andi" so you'll recognize future texts. Reply HELP to see the full list of things you can ask.

First 48 hours

You'll only hear from Andi if something actually needs your attention. No news = no problem. Reply STATUS any time to see what's irrigating right now.

First week

Try asking Andi a question in your own words — "Did Block 5 run yesterday?" or "How much water went to the south orchard this week?" When you're comfortable, try a small action — "Andi, close Block 7." Andi will confirm and do it.

Anytime

If you ever want to pause Andi's alerts, reply STOP. Reply START to turn them back on. You stay in control.

3. The alerts Andi texts you about

Andi sends texts only for things you'd want to know about. Each alert tells you what's happening, which block, and — when the data is clear — where to look first.

Alert family

When you'll hear from Andi

💧 Water isn't moving the way it should

Andi watches flow on every block and texts you when the numbers stop matching what your system should be doing — a possible leak, a block delivering less water than expected, a run scheduled to start but no water moving, or water flowing when nothing is scheduled.

📅 A scheduled run didn't go as planned

If a scheduled irrigation fails to start on time or fails to shut off cleanly, Andi flags it right away.

🔌 A device needs hands-on attention

Andi keeps an eye on your field hardware and pings you when a device goes quiet or runs low — for example, a valve battery is low or the farm has lost connectivity. (Routine sensor noise is filtered out; only real outages reach you.)

⚙️ Pump trouble

If your pump is automated with Lumo and the pump hits an emergency-shutoff condition or a system-level pressure decay test flags an issue, Andi texts you so you can get someone out there.

You can turn any alert family on or off — just let the Lumo Support team know what you'd like to modify.

4. Questions you can ask & actions you can request

Andi understands two kinds of requests: questions about your farm and actions on your farm. Both work in plain English, Spanish, or French — and you can chain them ("close Block 5 and tell me how much water it got today").

Examples

🔍 Questions Andi can answer

"What's irrigating right now?" · "Did Block 5 run yesterday?" · "How much water went to the south orchard this week?" · "Why did Andi flag a leak on Block 12?" · "Show me my last 5 irrigations."

🛠 Actions Andi can take

"Close Block 7." · "Open the south-orchard manifold." · "Run Block 12 for 30 minutes." · "Skip tomorrow's 6am schedule on Block 4." · "Schedule a 20-minute make-up run on Block 9 tonight." · "Note that Block 5 got hand-watered today." · "Switch my Andi texts to Spanish."

How actions work. Before Andi changes anything on your farm, it confirms in plain language — "Got it — closing Block 7 now. Reply CANCEL to stop." Every action is logged in your farm's history, tied to your phone number, so you and your team can always see what Andi did and when.

6. What Andi will — and won't — help with

✅ Andi will

🚫 Andi won't

Summarize what your irrigation system did, and what it's doing right now.

Tell you which specific piece of equipment to walk out and inspect.

Explain why an alert was sent, in plain language.

Recommend equipment, settings, or repairs.

Compare runs across blocks, weeks, or seasons, and pull historical patterns when you ask.

Diagnose a problem in the field.

Open or close a valve, start an irrigation, or reschedule a run when you ask it to.

Make outbound phone calls or reach you through any channel besides SMS.

Log a note on an irrigation so your team sees the context later.

Take action on its own. Andi only acts when you tell it to — and confirms first.

Override pump-level or farm-level safety locks. If a safety condition blocks the action, Andi tells you and stops.

Why the guardrails? Andi sticks to what your farm's data clearly shows and only takes the actions you ask for — that's how we keep its answers reliable and your farm safe. Field decisions like which valve to replace or how to set pressure regulation are still your team's call; Andi gives you the data and the remote control to back them up.

7. Languages

Andi reads and replies in English, Spanish, or French — no setup required. Whichever language you text in, Andi will match. You can also set a permanent default: "Andi, switch my texts to Spanish."

8. Privacy & access

Andi only sees and answers questions about your farm — and only takes actions on your farm. Anyone you've authorized as a contact can receive alerts, chat with Andi, and ask it to act; nobody else can. Every action Andi takes is recorded in your farm's history, attributed to the phone number that asked for it. Reply STOP at any time to pause everything.

To add someone else on your farm as a contact, ask your Lumo team — each contact must be authorized on the farm before Andi will text them or accept actions from their number.

9. Troubleshooting & FAQ

Question

Answer

I haven't gotten any texts from Andi. Is something wrong?

Probably not. Andi only texts when there's something to act on. If your farm has been running cleanly, that's good news. Reply STATUS any time to confirm Andi is reachable.

I got a text that didn't look quite right. What do I do?

Forward it to your Lumo contact. Andi has guardrails that catch most issues, but the team wants to know if something slips through.

I asked Andi to close a valve and nothing happened.

Andi confirms before any action — check that you replied to the confirmation. If the valve is offline or low on battery, Andi will tell you and stop. Reply STATUS to see the current state.

Did Andi just change my schedule? I didn't ask it to.

Andi only acts when asked. If you see an unexpected change, forward the conversation to your Lumo contact — they can pull the full log and confirm what happened.

Can I add someone else on my farm to receive alerts and take actions?

Yes — ask your Lumo team. Each contact has to be authorized on the farm before Andi will text them or accept actions from their number.

I asked a question and got a generic answer. Why?

Andi falls back to a simpler reply when the data doesn't fully support a richer one. Try rephrasing, or ask a more specific question (for example, name the block or date).

How do I stop the texts?

Reply STOP. Reply START to turn them back on.

Does Andi see other farms' data, or take actions on them?

No. Andi is locked to your farm. Anyone you've authorized as a contact can chat with Andi or ask it to act on your farm; nobody else can.
