Swap a Device in the Lumo Ops Center

How to replace a faulty device using the Installation and Maintenance tools in the Lumo Ops Center

Updated yesterday

Overview: Replacing a faulty or underperforming device is a two-step process. First, provision the new replacement unit as a backup device through the Installation tool. Then, execute the swap in the Maintenance tool, which transfers all block assignments from the old device to the new one automatically.

Before You Begin

  • Have the new (replacement) device ready, with its QR code label visible on the dome

  • Position the new device within 15 feet of the Base Unit

  • Power on the new device (LED will illuminate and flash white, then go solid once connected to the base unit)

  • Confirm that no active irrigation events are running on the device you plan to replace — the system will block the swap if irrigation is in progress

⚠️ Note: Base units cannot be swapped using this workflow. Contact Lumo support for base unit replacements.

Step 1 — Provision the New Device as a Backup (Field Tools → Installation)

  1. Log into the Ops Center on your mobile device.

  2. In the left sidebar, navigate to Field Tools → Installation.

  3. Click + Start New Installation and select the farm.

  4. Proceed through the wizard, until you reach Step 4: Scan Devices.

    1. Skip step 2 by clicking Continue, as the network is already configured

    2. Skip step 3 by clicking Continue, as the blocks are already established and the new device will inherit the block assignment after the swap process

  5. At Step 4, click + Add Backup at the bottom of the screen. If you are provisioning more than one new device, click add backup as many times as necessary for the number of devices required.

  6. Scan the QR code on the dome of the new device — this automatically captures its Serial ID.

  7. Proceed to Step 5: Deploy Configuration — the system pushes the farm's network and configuration to the new device.

  8. Proceed to Step 6: Update Firmware — the system checks whether the device has the required firmware version. If it does not, trigger the firmware update and wait for it to complete before continuing.

  9. Proceed to Step 7: Test Configuration — the system runs connectivity checks to confirm the device is online and communicating correctly.

  10. Click Complete to finalize provisioning.

The new device is now registered to the farm in backup status and is ready to be swapped in.

Step 2 — Swap the Device (Field Tools → Maintenance)

  1. In the left sidebar, navigate to Field Tools → Maintenance.

  2. Select + Start New Maintenance

  3. Select the Farm and click Continue

  4. Locate the old device (the one being replaced) by its Block assignment.

  5. Click the dropdown arrow to expand the device card

  6. Click the swap icon (up and down arrows)

  7. Choose a swap reason from the dropdown and leave a comment (optional), then Continue.

  8. Scan the QR code on the new device that you configured as a backup.

  9. Confirm and submit the swap.

The system will automatically:

  • Transfer all block assignments from the old device to the new device

  • Mark the new device as the active replacement

  • Log the swap with the reason, comment, and your username for auditing

After the Swap

  • Navigate to Management > Devices to verify that the new device is reporting telemetry.

  • The old device will be unassigned from all blocks. Coordinate with your Lumo contact to arrange hardware return or decommissioning.

  • If the swap was created by mistake and has not yet been executed, you can cancel the pending swap from the Maintenance tool.
