2" Wetware Installation

2" Wetware Installation

How to install the 2" wetware valve body

Updated over a week ago

Equipment needed

  • Lumo 2” wetware

  • Strap wrench

    • Note: a strap wrench is strongly preferred to avoid marring the valve components or over-tightening a union

  • Adjustable crescent wrench

  • Plumber’s grease

Step 1 - Remove the pre-installed spacer

  1. Make sure there’s no irrigation currently running

  2. Close the manual valve located upstream of the Lumo spacer

  3. Use a strap wrench if necessary to loosen the unions on the spacer. Finish loosening by hand

  4. Gently remove the spacer from the manifold

    1. If PVC cement has leaked into the spacer during the plumbing process, the spacer may be more difficult to remove. If this is the case, just wiggle the spacer back and forth and attempt to remove it again. If necessary, you can try to remove the spacer by hitting the center of it, but be extremely careful to not damage the unions or the manifold

  5. Once the spacer is removed, make sure there’s no glue on the union or flanged fitting where the O-ring of the valve will sit

Note: When loosening the unions on either side of the Lumo valve, there should be no difficulty doing this whatsoever. If it’s difficult and you need to consistently use the wrench to loosen the unions, stop immediately. This could mean one of two things:

  1. The system is pressurized and there’s still water in the line

  2. The union collars are cross-threaded and need to be re-aligned and very slowly loosened

Step 2 - Check the Lumo Wetware for Installation

  1. Remove the unions from the Lumo wetware

  2. Check the flow sensor using the steps below before you place the wetware on the manifold.

    1. Remove the flow conditioner and spin the impeller by hand

      1. Ensure the impeller spins with ease. If not, replace with a spare.

      2. Ensure the impeller is pushed into the valve all the way.

Step 3 - Install the Lumo Wetware

  1. Coat the O-rings with a dab of plumber’s grease to help position the valve on the manifold without friction and create a stronger seal

  2. Ensure the O-rings are laying flat in their grooves on the wetware

  3. Find the directional arrow located on the wetware and make sure that it’s oriented in the same direction as the flow of water through the manifold

  4. Place the wetware between the union fittings on the manifold, making sure the O-rings remain in place and do not get bunched up or twisted (this will cause leaks)

  5. Carefully align the ends of the wetware with the unions on the manifold. You want them to be flush with the unions and completely straight, otherwise the union collars will not thread properly and could become cross-threaded

  6. Hand-tighten the union collars onto the newly installed wetware

  7. Once completely hand tightened, tighten ¼ of a turn with a strap wrench (do not overtighten - you can always tighten further when testing for leaks)
